Effectively managing the water produced during oil and gas extraction is an issue of increasing importance in fields across the United States and around the world. Increasing volumes of produced water add extra costs and burdens to oil and gas production operations, as well as heightened environmental concerns and regulatory risks. Economic pressures and strengthening environmental initiatives are combining to make new water management methodologies and technologies a necessity for the future. Offshore and in many onshore basins, produced water can be discharged as long as the hydrocarbon content of the water is at acceptable levels.
