Comorbidome, Pattern, and Impact of Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome in Real Life

van Boven and colleagues sought to determine the prevalence, comorbidities, and hospitalization risk of asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap syndrome (ACOS) on the Balearic Islands of Spain. This retrospective cohort study comprised the MAJORICA (Majorca Real-World Investigation in COPD and Asthma Database) cohort, a registry of patients aged 18 years or older with a physician diagnosis of asthma and/or COPD before 2012. A physician-confirmed diagnosis of both asthma and COPD defined ACOS in this study. More restrictive inclusion criteria, to improve clinical validity, were used for a confirmatory analysis, additionally requiring age 40 years or older, smoking history, FEV_1/FVC ratio less than 0.7, and documented respiratory medication use.
