Recovery: Three Lives, One Workplace

This article presents the first-person accounts of three individuals whose lives and recoveries intersected with Thresholds' adoption of evidence-based practices as the agency began its transformation into a recovery-driven organization. Each of these individuals faced different challenges and each developed a unique perspective as their roles evolved from consumer to consumer-provider. Virginia's professional development and her recovery deepened and gained focus through self-disclosure and peer involvement, as well as her own experiences as a recipient of certain evidence-based practices. Ron started out as a member of Thresholds, received support and training, and became an accountant with Thresholds; he later rose to become Thresholds' second Director of Recovery, the position he currently holds. Shirley, who also began as a member of Thresholds, never intended to become part of the mental health system, but found a niche within it as part of her own recovery.
