More and more component suppliers are using online catalogues of their 3D CAD models to boost sales. At the worst, the phrase "3D CAD download" is impenetrable techno babble to you. At best, it is something you do often and view as quite handy. If you are in the first group, don't turn the page just yet - techno babble will be kept to a bare minimum here. If you belong to the second group, the chances are you're one of an increasing number of internet-savvy engineers who save time and money with 3D CAD downloads. So says Timo Bruggemannn, European manager of Solidworks' 3D Partstream.net. "You want to buy a motor for a machine you are designing," he says. "In the past you'd have looked for one in lots of big catalogues, then modelled it from the 2D drawing in the catalogue to fit your design. And hopefully it fits and hopefully it is the same thing as is in the catalogue - basically there is a high risk of inaccuracy and it takes a long time.
