Hardin's Putative Critique

Of the neo-Malthusian voices emanating from ecologist ranks, one of the most powerful and certainly the most provocative is that of Garrett Hardin (1915-2003), professor emeritus of human ecology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I propose to show that, despite secondary disagreements, Garrett Hardin and Henry George may, in what is most germane to the focus of these explorations, be far closer to each other than might first appear. I propose to show that what they have in common is obscured by a semantic difference―ironically, a difference in the meaning that they attach to the word "common."
