The battle of numbers continues. The U.S. Census Bureau, in its 1997 Economic Census for Service Industries (published in 1999), says that drycleaning is a $5.6 billion industry. Recognizing that Census figures are notoriously understated, industry experts placed the figure at $7 billion. Interestingly, researchers for one of the new breed of competition ups the figure to $8 billion, while one e-commerce startup sees drycleaning as a $35 billion industry.
