LME CEO Matthew Chamberlain: Positions and profits reinforced

One year at the helm of the London Metal Exchange (LME) Matthew Chamberlain, now 36, is still the youngest CEO of all major exchanges worldwide. And reporting a 10% rise in Average Trading Volumes (ADV) from January to June this year to overall 660,105 lots after 625,784 just underscores his success. Talking to our Journal’s correspondent Katharina Otzen-Odrich in London, Chamberlain freely admits that this growth was partly due to the bullish aluminium market in the first half of the year. Nevertheless he stressed his belief in a bright future for the LME, even come Brexit or trade wars. At least he can further rely on his chairman Charles Li Xiaojia, who was advised by Chamberlain, then still investment banker, to buy the LME in 2012 for the Hong Kong Exchange & Clearing (HKEx) Group. Now Li just got the renewal of his contract as CEO of HKEX, which first started effective 16 January 2010, for a further 3-year term from 16 October 2018 to 15 October 2021. Even the usually hard nosed critics in the commodities industries have to admit that this along with rising volumes and profits will reinforce the positions, too.
