The statistics are in: The growing wave of Hispanic immigrants is having a profound effect on American society, and on the laundry and dry-cleaning industries as well. According to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of the Census, 28,800 new jobs will be added in the laundry and dry-cleaning industries this decade, as the sector grows to 262,500 jobs nationwide in 2010 from 235,700 in 2000. Most of the jobs will be lower-paying and filled by recent immigrants―mainly Hispan-ics. Hispanics will account for 42% of those employed in laundry and dry-cleaning by 2010, up from 34% in 2000.
