The Green River oil shale (GROS) formation is an enormous resource for hydrocarbons with an estimated in-place reserve of 1.44 trillion barrels1. Michael Siskin is receiving the 2012 ACS Division of Energy and Fuels Storch Award in part for his extensive work on understanding oil shale. He developed an approach for breaking the organic-inorganic interactions in oil shales.2,3 Using X-ray diffraction they quantified the minerals in GROS.4 Working with Kelemen, the sulfur X-ray absorption near edge structure (S-XANES) technique has been used to elucidate the organic forms of sulfur in GROS kerogen.5 In a culmination of this work, Siskin combined his detailed analyses to produce a detailed model of GROS.6
