Visitors to Atlanta's SciTrek Science and Technology Museum saw how clay, sand and other organic materials are blended into ceramics for use in everyday life through the ACerS Centennial Traveling Ceramics Technology Exhibit, "The Magic of Ceramics." On display June 5-Aug. 30, 1998, the seven showcases highlighted different topical areas within the field of ceramics. Museum staff gave visitors a unique hands-on experience with demonstrations of high-tech ceramics at scheduled times each day. The demonstrations included filling a tooth cavity with a ceramic compound, heating a space-shuttle tile until it glows (simulating re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere) and levitating a magnet above superconductive ceramic tiles cooled by liquid nitrogen.
