The institutions of law, comprising the legal environment, private legal mechanisms, and legal knowledge, play a critical role every day in managerial activity. Without these legal institutions, there is little doubt that markets would cease to function altogether. Moving beyond the enabling function of law, this article introduces the concept of legal knowledge as a resource that can be managed to offer sustainable competitive advantage.
