Grinker addresses these issues from a number of angles, including rich narrative accounts of families' experiences with autism in a variety of societies, historical debates over the nature of autism as a diagnostic category, and discussion of the sociocultural forces implicated in bringing the idea of a possible "epidemic" into public consciousness. [...] I find many of the details of Isabel and her family's story - Isabel's passionate interest in one of Monet's paintings; the anxious meetings of lawyers, school principals, and educators as Grinker sought to negotiate appropriate educational accommodations for Isabel; and her music lessons and recitals - are what fix most firmly in my memory of the book.
