Alstom-Rusal partnership delivers rectifier system for Bratsk smelter

A joint venture set up between Alstom and Rusal has developed and commissioned a series of rectifier units for dedicated power applications at the world's largest aluminium smelter, Bratsk in Siberia. The total capacity of this massive plant exceeds 1m tpy of aluminium each. The tailored rectifier design was developed entirely by the JV engineering team taking into consideration all the requirements of the end customer and incorporating many years of combined experience in the design and operation of such equipment. For example, the overall dimensions and connectivity of the equipment allowed the smelter substation to be revamped without any change to the existing bus bar configuration and buildings. The use of latest system components and also the maximum possible localisation of production enabled the equipment to be developed with high performance and reliability - and, according to both companies, at an attractive market cost. Before the start of series production, pre-production samples were manufactured and thoroughly tested to confirm their high performance, and also to help make a number of refinements in the design and production technology.
