Until now, the development of aluminium-lithium alloys has fo-cused almost exclusively on wrought alloys and their associat-ed technology. Very little study has been devoted to them as casting alloys. The precision casting process, which is a cost-effective, near-net-shape manufacturing method with specific advantages for the production of complex components, is particularly appro-priate in this context. The problem associated with making castings from these alloys lies especially in the high reactivity of the alloying component lithium, the sensitivity of the alloy phases to the slightest contamination, and in a suscepti-bility to hot cracking familiar from the copper-rich aluminium alloys. The aim of this work was to inyes-tigate the casting properties of aluminium-lithium alloys with standard designations 8090 and 2090, and compare them with alloy A 201. Further measures for structure refinement are also indi-cated.
