Sweden's Basics

Sweden is in Northern Europe, sharing borders with Norway to the west and Finland to the east, and connected to Denmark by the 0resund Bridge. While Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union by area, it has a relatively small population, totaling only about 9.4 million people. Sweden has been an independent and unified country since the Middle Ages. During the past 200 years, it has not been directly involved in any wars, and it has traditionally pursued a nonaligned foreign policy in peacetime and neutrality in wartime. Sweden has been a European Union member since Jan.l, 1995. But it is not part of the Euro currency area, having rejected the introduction of the Euro in a 2003 referendum.
