The Cold War was finally over and the majestic 110-story-tall twin towers of the World Trade Center stood proudly at the southern tip of Manhattan Island as a symbol of America's financial power and prestige. American Airlines, United, and TWA flew jumbo jets from major cities in the United States to almost every continent in the world, and the Space Shuttle Columbia was back in orbit as a symbol of the successful recovery NASA had made from the Challenger disaster nine years earlier.
