Australia's national carrier Qantas was once one of the major players in the international air travel market. However, today the airline is in the midst of a major reorganisation as it attempts to turn around its loss-making operations. Domestically, Virgin Australia's vigorous assault on the lucrative corporate sector, from which Qantas has reaped tremendous benefit since the collapse of rival carrier Ansett in 2001, is snatching valuable market share from the national airline. This position was made more precarious in November 2012 when Virgin announced that it had acquired Skywest, one of the country's largest regional airlines, and was taking a majority stake in fellow low-cost operator Tiger Airways. The move was a clear indication that Virgin would be competing with Qantas in every market sector in Australia.
