JPL Stops, Smells Roses

California's Jet propulsion laboratory, virtually the master of the solar system with its series of planetary probes, designed yet another stunning craft, this one for the Tournament of Roses parade last January in Pasadena. The float commemorated the 50th anniversary of the United States' first space mission, the launch of JPL's Explorer 1. Decorating a JPL craft's solar panel is a rendering of JPL's Explorer 1-era director William Pickering, astrophysicist James Van Allen, and rocket designer Wernher von Braun.
