The story of african-americans in aviation is often told through the World War II exploits of the Tuskegee airmen. Phillip Thomas Tucker's new book shows there is more to the story. There were black aviators, men and women, who were aloft in the two decades before the first class of cadets arrived in Tuskegee, Alabama. In Chicago, John C. Robinson earned his pilot's license, played a key role in organizing a black flying club, and advocated an end to racial exclusion in aeronautics.
