THE USS GERALD R. FORD launched and recovered its first aircraft off the coast of Virginia last July 28. The Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet overhead, flown by a Navy test squadron VX-23 pilot, is the first fixed-wing airplane to land on (and shortly after, the first to be catapulted from) the Ford six days after the carrier was commissioned. The Ford is the first of its class, replacing the venerable USS Enterprise. Two future Ford-class carriers, named the John F. Kennedy and Enterprise (a new ship), are in the works.
