Area Source Standards Proposed for Four Source Categories

CAA Sections 112(c)(3) and 112(k)(3)(B) require that EPA study the risk posed by area (i.e., nonmajor) source hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions in urban locales. The national program envisioned by Congress has three primary provisions. EPA must: 1. Identify at least 30 HAPs emitted by area sources that pose the greatest risk to public health in the greatest number of urban areas, 2. Identify the categories or subcatego-ries of sources accounting for ≥ 90% of the aggregate emissions of each of the 30 identified HAPs, and 3. Issue emission standards for those source categories.
