Revisions Proposed to Emission Limits in NSPS for Large Medical Waste Incinerators

Under CAA Section 129, EPA is required to impose controls on emissions from solid waste combustion units (i.e., incinerators). For medical waste incinerators, Section 129 requires that the agency: 1) impose controls representing maximum achievable control technology (MACT) on new and existing units; 2) set specific emission limits for particulate matter, carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO_x), hydrogen chloride (HC1), sulfur dioxide (SO_2), cadmium, lead, mercury, dioxins and dibenzofurans, and fly ash/ bottom ash; 3) incorporate new facility siting requirements into the control standards; and 4) specify operator training and certification requirements.
