MACT Standards Proposed for Electric Utility Steam Generating Units

On May 3, 2011 (76/tf 24976-25147), EPA proposed MACT standards for coal- and oil-fired electric utility steam generating units (EGUs). For new or existing coal-fired EGUs, the proposed rule would establish particulate matter, hydrogen chloride (HC1), and mercury emission limits. For new or existing oil-fired EGUs, the proposed MACT standards specify emission limits for total metal HAPs, HC1, and hydrogen fluoride (HF). The proposed rule would also revise the NSPS for new electric utility steam generating units to set new emission standards for particulate matter, SO_2, and NO_x. EPA indicates that about 1,350 coal- and oil-fired units at 525 power plants would be regulated under the proposed MACT standards.
