Airbus unveiled its Concept Plane - an engineer's dream of a future aircraft that will never fly in the form or shape depicted - at the Farnborough Airshow in 2010. It followed up last year with an equally outlandish concept for an aircraft cabin in 2050. The Concept Cabin debuted at the Paris Airshow, where Airbus presented a 360-degree animated movie and even a 'fly-through' app for iPads and iPhones, illustrating its view of the future. The public is apparently very keen on dreaming, as a clip showing the cabin received half a million hits on YouTube in its first week alone. And no wonder; the images of the big panoramic windows in the Concept Cabin are quite stunning. Everything about it is different to today's tube-style cabins, but was it not Airbus that enticed the public with similarly fantastic impressions of futuristic interiors only a decade or so ago, when it proposed cabin styles for the upcoming A380 'superjumbo'? There were illustrations of waterfalls, bowling alleys, restaurants and fitness studios aboard the gigantic double-decker. But the public soon learned to its dismay that all this was just a marketing trick, using ideas that would never fly.
