Engine oils are vitally important in commercial aviation. The temperatures generated by an engine running at high performance power result in coking - oil degradation which leaves behind solid residues in the engine. For an airline, that leads to costs in removing the residues and lost revenue from having an aircraft sitting on the ground. Some oils developed in the past had managed to reduce coking, but at a price: the all-important elastomer seals in the components of engines deteriorated faster due to the type of additives being used to reduce the coking. One problem was solved, but another emerged.
