It was a real surprise when, on November 24, 2012, the Chinese state-run information agency, Xinhua, reported that the first China People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, had conducted its first arrested landing and take-off operations - undertaken by J-15 fighters. Xinhua also distributed photographs showing two J-15s landing, being serviced on the deck and then blasting-off from the carrier's distinctive ski-jump; and video footage of the carrier flight operations was broadcast by the official China Central TV channel.
