Brazil Tests New Smart Weapons

The Forca Aerea Brasileira (FAB, Brazilian Air Force) and AEQ recently performed tests of a GPS/GLONASS and inertial navigating system (INS) guidance unit for installation on 500lb (272kg) Mk 82 bombs. The upgraded munitions are called SMKB-82 and use a kit similar to laser-guided bombs. It has a new nose and tail units incorporating GPS and GLONASS satellite positioning systems and an INS to guide the weapon to its target. The system was developed by AEQ together with Mectron and is controlled by a small computer from Britanite-BSD and Mectron.
