Barksdale B-52Hs Demonstrate MITO

Boeing B-52H Stratofortresses of the 2nd Bombardment Wing recently carried out a minimum interval take-off (MITO) at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. Ten of the bombers took part in the MITO exercise on August 14. The goal was to get all of the aircraft airborne within 15 minutes of the initial alert notice. Gunpowder- filled starter cartridges were used to turn over the Pratt & Whitney TF33-P-3/103 turbofans (faster than when using the standard compressed-air carts) before the bombers taxied to the runway and departed in quick succession.
