The Sultanate of Oman has been one of the most stable countries in the Gulf region over the past 30 years, a status achieved through the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. It has close ties with Its neighbouring states, both economically and militarily, and is one, of the six member states of the Gulf Co-operation Council. That said. its government is aware of the volatility of some of its near neighbours, as demonstrated by the wars that have occurred over the past 15 years in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the current tension over Iran's nuclear programme. Oman is strategically positioned, with its northern border overlooking the Straits of Hormuz, a vital transit point for vessels carrying around 25% of the world's oil supply.
