Probably the best-known Russian aircraft of the 20th century, the MiG-21 was built in larger numbers than any other aircraft since World War Two. Development began at the Soviet Mikoyan-Guryevich design bureau (now incorporated within the Russian Aircraft Corporation as RSK-MiG) in 1953, with the Ye-5 aerodynamic prototype (of tailed delta configuration) flying on June 16, 1956. The Ye-6 pre-production aircraft followed in late 1957, with the first production aircraft given the NATO reporting name of Fishbed-A entering service in 1958. Only a few were produced.
