In November last year, the parent company of Korean Air, Hanjin KAL, announced a deal to buy a majority stake in Asiana Airlines for 1.8 trillion South Korean won (US$1.6bn). "Given the crisis the airline industry is currently facing, it is unavoidable to restructure the entire market" a statement from the carrier revealed. It continued: "The main reason behind Korean Air's decision to acquire Asiana Airlines... is to stabilise the Korean aviation industry, which is suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic."
