Hawker Siddeley Hawk Tls were ordered for the RAF in March 1972 as an advanced jet trainer and replacement for the Folland Gnat T.I. The HS.1182, as the project was designated prior to becoming the Hawk, was designed from the start to appeal to the export market as the 176 aircraft ordered by the RAF would not have been viable for the manufacturer by itself. RAF Hawks were to be used for advanced flying and weapons training. For the latter role they would be equipped with a Ferranti ISIS F195 gunsight, a centreline-mounted 30mm Aden cannon pod and two inboard wing pylons.
