Following agreement that the Saab JAS 39C/D Gripen was to be purchased by the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) to replace its F-5 fleet (see Military News, December, p12), the Thai Cabinet approved the procurement of the initial six aircraft on January 8. A budget of 19 million baht ($644.32 million) has been allocated for the government-to-government deal for six Gripens (two single-seat JAS 39Cs and four two-seat JAS 39Ds), spares and flight training, plus renovation of facilities.
