A slick Virgin Atlantic Airways television advert with the strapline 'Still red hot after 25 years' has recently been airing. Consequently, there can be few people in Britain still unaware that the airline is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its launch. Although the TV advertisement is undeniably stylish, it wasn't all glitz and glamour back in June 1984. When Virgin started operations there were many industry observers quick to predict its early demise, as founder Sir Richard Branson was well aware.
