Smart Wing Testbeds

Airbus and Saab are leading a joint industry and European Union project called the Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft (SFWA), part of the seven year Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative to advance environmentally friendly aeronautic technology (see Green Regional Aircraft, December 2008, p14). SFWA has the aim of developing an active wing that can control the loads and air-flow over the wing using laminar flow control (LFC) technology to reduce drag. The new wing will also have a lower structural mass than current units and it is hoped that overall a 20% reduction in fuel-burn can be demonstrated by the project.
