These are particularly tricky times for All Nippon Airways. Like most airlines, Japan's biggest domestic carrier is taking drastic action to deal with lower demand, yet at the same time it is preparing to exploit major growth opportunities expected next year when more slots will result from expansion at two of its major operating bases. Next year, too, marks the long-awaited arrival of the Boeing 787. ANA was the launch customer for the Dreamliner and hopes the first of the 50 on order will arrive in February, 22 months later than originally scheduled. In the meantime, 'emergency action' and 'belt tightening' form part of the retrenchment action for 2009 to keep the carrier on track for better times. ANA is one of the world's leading airlines. In 2007 it carried 50.4 million passengers on scheduled flights, 2.4% more than in 2006. That ranked it tenth in the world and the biggest domestic airline outside North America and China.
