After having a relatively easy time with the development of its first two jet fighters, the FH-1 Phantom and the F2H Banshee, the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation ran into difficulties with its next naval fighter, the F3H Demon. Most stemmed from the ill advised, initial insistence of the US Navy that the troublesome Westinghouse J40 turbojet be used. Nevertheless, the McDonnell design team, ably led by Herman D Barkey, succeeded beyond the most sanguine expectation by coming up with a true winner, the F-4 Phantom II.
