RAF Reaper Ops Ramp Up

The RAFs No.39 Squadron, which operates the MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), is in the process of ramping up operations. Currently the unit has 17 crews assigned, each comprising a pilot and sensor operator, but is seeking to increase that number to more than 40. The planned increase follows a MoD announcement made in December 2009 about plans to double RAF Reaper capability. Consequently, five more Reapers are to be purchased, adding to the five already in operation.
