Fit to Fly?

Being a pilot is often considered to be a stressful occupation. The crash of Germanwings flight 9525 in 2015 certainly threw the mental health of aircrew into sharp focus, when the A320's First Officer (FO), Andreas Lubitz, locked his captain out of the cockpit, then deliberately crashed the jet into the French Alps. The investigation into this terrible event revealed that Lubitz was undergoing treatment for depression and suicidal tendencies, and had been declared unfit to work by his doctor. However, under strict German privacy laws, his GP had not been allowed to tell his employer. Other notable suicide-by-pilot cases include SilkAir 185, EgyptAir 990 and JAL 350.
