10,000hrs for CBP Predator Bs

The General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Predator B unmanned aircraft operated by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency passed the 10,000 operating hour milestone in May. The CBP has operated five Predators for border enforcement, anti-trafficking and anti-terrorism operations since 2005. In that time, the agency says they have helped apprehend 4,865 illegal immigrants and 238 smugglers, and seize 33,773lb (15,315kg) of contraband. The CBP also uses the Predators for disaster relief missions, providing real-time assessments after catastrophic events, such as in response to floods and to monitor the Gulf of Mexico oil crisis. Two additional Predator Bs are due for delivery in 2012. They will be fitted with updated radar and communications equipment.
