The Air Force and Air National Guard are working to alleviate the rapidly approaching shortfall of fighter aircraft to perform the air sovereignty alert (ASA) mission, the bulk of which falls to the Air Guard. One of the solutions could be to procure new-build F-15 or F-16 fighters in the interim until the fifth gen F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter is fielded in the Air Guard in sufficient numbers, Lt. Gen. Harry M. Wyatt III, ANG director, said April 22 on Capitol Hill.
