When most officers think of the Comptroller Officer Assignments Team, the first things they tend to think of are different locations. This is probably for good reason; financial management warriors are valiantly serving at over 150 locations around the world. From places like Muscat, Oman to Brunssum, The Netherlands to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, 750 financial management officers span the globe providing stellar support to coalition, joint, and Air Force missions. But, in reality, locations are just a peripheral factor in the true spectrum of officer assignment actions. In fact, the primary purposes of officer assignments are to support mission requirements and to professionally develop our FM officer corps. This article will provide you a brief overview of the drivers for officer assignments. Additionally it will outline some of the roles and responsibilities of assignments officers. It will also provide insight into how to best posture yourself to compete for future assignments. Ultimately this article will offer you a greater appreciation for the dynamic nature of officer assignments and an understanding of why "locations" are just a small aspect of the assignments business.
