I'd like to address the apparently widely accepted industry notion that a media air filter causes higher static pressures. This is simply not true. However, I thought the same thing until I attended an airflow class in 2011 held by MEEA. In that class, the instructor demonstrated how a media air filter (4- or 5-inch) of the same MERV rating as a 1-inch filter actually has less resistance (static pressure drop) to airflow than its 1-inch counterpart.
