CREATING A RAIDER

Along with numerous other deficiencies, the United States entered the Second World War with a distinct lack of aerial reconnaissance capabilities. This essential mission was particularly missing in far-flung parts of the world such as the South Pacific and Alaska where much of the landmasses were basically uncharted. To help with this lack of dedicated reconnaissance aircraft, a wide variety of available airframes were quickly modified so that military planners would be able to create up-to-the-minute maps for pilots and crews.
