Safety is never far from Harley Curless's mind. Lest he forget, a special keepsake reminds the owner of Astoria, Illinois-based Curless Flying Service of the high cost he paid for a serious accident early on in his career. In 1980, he tore up an airplane when it hit a large crosscountry wire. Fortunately, the aircraft bore the brunt of the damage. Hardly a day goes by that he doesn't think about his low-wire escape. Curless keeps a vestige of the accident, a two-foot piece of thick wire, in his office as a daily reminder of how lucky he was to walk away from the wreck. He also flies past the spot where it happened once a year. The annual sojourn is another reminder of his good fortune.
