摘要

In its latest annual report, the oil services giant KBR warned its share holders that measures preventing it from using go-betweens could cost it contracts. Since it admitted on Feb. 11 that it had bribed Nigerian officials (AEI598), KBR must operate under the eye of a corporate monitor at the behest of the U.S. Justice Department. Named by the Justice Department but paid by KBR, the monitor must see that the group complies with American legislation against corrupting foreign officials. He will keep a specially close eye on KBR's use of agents and intermediaries. The oil services group insists that middle-men are necessary to land contracts. In its 10-K report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission last month, KBR explained that all of its major overseas projects were negotiated and carried out through the intermediary of agents.
