Petronas plans its difficult departure

The steady decline in oil production in South Sudan, now at around 154,000 b/d compared to 400,000 b/d at the time of the country's independence in 2011, could well accelerate. The reason for this rather dismal outlook is that one of the long-standing investors in the oil sector, Malaysian state-owned company Petronas, no longer intends to invest in South Sudan. The oil company has made it quite clear to President Salva Kiir's government that it plans to leave the country and that its teams are looking for new buyers as soon as possible.
