Foreign forces struggle to establish communications with Mozambican army top brass

President Filipe Nyusi's home province of Cabo Delgadocarried all the country's hopes of future prosperity untilinsurrection stopped the development of TotalEnergiesmega gas project in December 2020. Since the end ofJuly, however, Admiral Joaquim Mangrasse has made onetriumphal announcement after another regarding theadvances made by the Forças Armadas de Defesa deMoçambique (FADM) in the province, with the support oftroops from Rwanda and, to a lesser extent, the SouthernAfrican Development Community (SADC). Although he isthe one who has been announcing these militarysuccesses to the public, Mangrasse is not the key figurein Mozambique's response to the self-proclaimedJihadist insurrection, which has been organised by otherofficers in the FADM high command.
