Race for top job at De Beers diamond offshoot Debswana heats up

2021 promises to be a pivotal year for Debswana, the joint venture owned in equal shares by the Botswana government and diamond giant De Beers. The company is responsible for more than 95% of Botswana's diamond production, is the second largest employer behind the state, and the main driver of the economy. Its activities contribute to one third of the state's revenue, and to 70% of foreign currency inflows. Botswana itself is the second largest diamond producer in the world after Russia, and the first on the African continent.
