Two years into his presidency, Andry Rajoelina has still not filled some the mostimportant diplomatic appointments, leaving Madagascar without an ambassadorto the US, the UN, or South Africa. The arrest of three Malagasy smugglerscarrying 73.5 kg of gold into Johannesburgin early January made President AndryRajoelina regret not appointing anambassador to South Africa. A diplomaticresolution to the incident would have beenpreferable - Antananarivo had requested forthe Malagasy suspects to be repatriated -rather than having to go to court over thematter.
